JESSICA STRICKLAND
INDUSTRY INTERESTS
My interests lay in the fuzzy area between planning, science, marine biology, climate change, photography, scuba diving, filmmaking and learning. That is, if there even is such an area. In other words my interests are very broad, I have a very diverse skill set and I like to keep my mind open to different opportunities.
My interests within the planning profession lie in the natural resource management and community engagement realms. I have a particular interest in engaging the community and tailoring policy to come up with better solutions to managing some of our greatest environmental assets, such as the Great Barrier Reef.
Me personal passion for the ocean, our coastal systems, marine biology and scuba diving come from my upbringing; growing up in Papua New Guinea on some of the world's most pristine reef systems and as the daughter of a fisheries scientist. My curiosity about our reef ecosystems and my Bachelor of Science majoring in Marine Biology are likely to influence my future professional decisions.
Climate change adaptation and mitigation and environmental conservation are also at the heart of my industry interests and I hope to be able to contribute positively to these endeavours within my professional career. I am particularly interested in how our coastal communities will adapt and overcome the many challenges that they face as a result of climate change, population growth and rapid urbanisation.
I am also interested in making short films that shed light on some of the world's injustices and help draw attention to these issues that we often do not speak about or hear about enough in the mainstream media. I will use social media as an outlet to spread awareness of some of these issues. This is something that I will likely do outside of my traditional day to day 'job'.
I am passionate about making scientific information more accessible to the public. To do this I want to contribute to bridging the gap between scientists (and the information they convey in publications) and the public (who is often just fed a version of the scientific evidence by the often ill-informed media). I hope to use documentaries and films as a tool to patch this divide and make science more accessible.
I want to always be learning and this is where my interest in research comes in. I am likely to always be involved in furthering my education and my understanding of the world, whether it be through formalised studies such as a PhD or through self-driven research and learning.
